Will you need a high-speed connection to facilitate large file downloads, no-wait connections and/or streaming media? |
YES | NO |
Assuming that using either a cable modem or DSL modem is an option in your area, that's probably the best choice for a high-speed connection. Are cable services, DSL or both available in your area? |
YES | NO |
Stay with dial-up service. It is inexpensive, everywhere, reliable, and secure. However, it isn't fast. |

A 400 kbps satellite dish may be your only high-speed choice. Optionally, ISDN and fixed wireless are only remote possibilities and are expensive. |

Are you planning to run e-mail, FTP, Web, credit card operations or other services? |
YES | NO |
Between similarly priced cable and DSL services, bear in mind that cable usually provides faster speeds for the same amount of money you'd pay for the DSL connection. Cable degrades somewhat as more users try to share the line, however. By comparison, DSL tends to cost more and is more difficult to set up. |

SDSL, which is a version of DSL with higher upload speeds may be your best choice, but it's not the cheapest choice. Cables that are limited to upstream speeds as low as 128 kbps aren't really meant for servers. Further, many cable service agreements restrict or prohibit running servers on the cable connection. |
