Windows 10 Boot Into Safe Mode ------------------------------ as of 12/02/19 Startup Options When Windows 10 Can't Finish Start-up or Login -------------------------------------------------------------- Method 1 -------- 1. Interrupt power-up 3 times in a row after seeing the Windows 10 logo. This should put the computer into diagnostic mode with blue/white screens 2. Under "Automatic Repair" choose "Advanced Options" 3. Choose "Troubleshoot" 4. Choose "Advanced Options" 5. Choose "Start-up Settings 6. Choose "Restart" 7. Choose "4", "5" or "6" of the Safe Mode options. 8. Login with the administrator password--probably is "password" 9. Adjust password of the user account under Settings Method 2 -------- 1-6 (same) 7. Choose 8. In command prompt use: bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal You should see a notice of successful entry 9. Exit the command prompt 10. On the next blue/white screen choose "Continue" 11. Login with administrator password and make necessary changes. 12. Restart the system and re-enter command mode. 13. Then use: bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot This will let the computer boot normally. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Startup Options from Normal Windows 10 -------------------------------------- Step 1: Right-click Start button and navigate the mouse over Shut down or sign out, which reveals a bunch of power options. Step 2: Press and Hold Shift key and then click Restart. Wait until your computer reboots and enters into the Advanced Options screen. Alternatively, you can access Advanced options via Settings app (Windows key + I) and then navigate to Update & security > Recovery. At this moment an Advanced Startup screen followed by Restart now option should appear on the screen. Just click it. Step 3: Your computer will now boot into an option-laden screen as shown below. Just hit Troubleshoot to continue. Step 4: Click Advanced options > Startup Settings and then hit Restart. Step 5: Let your PC automatically boot into another Startup Settings screen, with a bunch of startup options listed along with a selection number. Just press the '4' key or 'F4′ key on your keyboard to initiate the reboot into Safe Mode. You may also boot into Safe Mode with Networking, by pressing '5' or 'F5′. System Configuration Utility ---------------------------- Step 1: Right-click Start button and choose Run. Step 2: Type msconfig in the Start > Run box and hit Enter. Step 3: Wait until System Configuration is launched, then go to the Boot tab and check the Safe boot option under Boot options. Also ensure Minimal is selected as the sub-option. Besides, you can enable the Network option, if you wish to maintain network connectivity in Safe Mode. Step 4: After you have chosen the desired options, just hit OK or Apply button, and restart your computer. Your computer should now boot directly into Safe Mode. After you've entered an incorrect password: 1. Select the Reset password link on the sign-in screen. If you use a PIN instead, see PIN sign-in issues. If you're using a work device that's on a network, you may not see an option to reset your password or PIN. In that case, contact your administrator. 2. Answer your security questions. 3. Enter a new password. 4. Sign in as usual with the new password. Reset local account password for Windows 10, before version 1803 ---------------------------------------------------------------- For versions of Windows 10 earlier than 1803, local account passwords can't be reset because there are no security questions. You can reset your device to choose a new password, however this option will permanently delete your data, programs, and settings.
