Windows XP Mode (inside Windows 7 Professional) as of 03/25/10 1. Determine whether the computer has 32-bit or 64-bit architecture Start | Right-mouse on Computer | Properties and view the pane. 2. Visit the browser page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx 3. Click the button "Windows XP Mode" which downloads WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe (470MB), and then run the installer. (3-5 min.) 4. Return to the webpage and click the button "Windows Virtual PC" which downloads and quick installs Windows6.1-KB958559-X86.msu. Restart the computer. 5. Return to the webpage and click the button "Windows XP Mode Update" which downloads and quick installs Windows6.1-KB977206-X86.msu. Restart the computer. 6. Start | All Programs | Windows Virtual PC | Windows XP Mode 7. The UserName is "XPM user" (default), create and duplicate a password. Windows XP Mode will start after a short delay. 8. Programs inside the Windows XP Mode can now be installed. Notes and Concerns: (Windows XP Mode SHOULDN'T BE USED ON THE INTERNET!!) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- a. The floppy disk is listed as "A:", but the USB floppy drive is actually at the mapped drive "A on " which has a path of "\\tsclient\A\" b. Multiple floppies in sequence will not load past floppy disk 1. c. Windows XP Mode has no Anti-Virus and probably needs one. d. Printer drivers must be installed. e. Access to folders and drives in the Windows 7 environment is possible but it is not assumed to have a path back to Windows XP Mode also. Windows XP Mode appears to be only partially sandboxed and may have serious security flaws. f. Windows XP Mode uses Internet Explorer 6 (default) that should be upgraded to Internet Explorer 8. (Internet Explorer 9--to be released-- will not work with Windows XP and probably won't with Windows XP Mode. g.
