SSL negotiation is a direct connection method that requires SSL to be available. If it's not, the connection will fail. TLS negotiation, on the other hand, is a method in which your mail client asks the mail server if it supports SSL. If it does, the mail client will make its connection using SSL. If it doesn't, it will revert to the basic, unencrypted POP3 protocol. When using TLS, you probably don't need to adjust port numbers. Just continue to use the regular POP3 port (110) and regular SMTP port (25), which should work just fine. If TLS isn't possible, configure it to use SSL instead. In some cases, you might need to specify the port numbers to use for SSL, TLS, and SMTPS. POP3 over an SSL connection typically uses port 995, and SMTP over SSL uses port 465. Call your ISP and ask if it supports them if they support secure e-mail connections. If the answer is yes, ask if there is information online to help with configuring your particular e-mail client. If they don't support secure e-mail connections, don't take their word for it — try to configure a secure connection anyway. I say that because I've found that some tech-support people at various ISPs don't know that their systems do, in fact, support secure e-mail connections. I discovered that by simply trying it anyway. SPECIAL CONFIGURATIONS WITH YAHOO When incoming mail passes through a domain such as gregory-builders.com the user account via mail.yahoo.com requires a special configuration to allow its servers to know who can send e-mail through. Thus a subuser needs to be added to the Yahoo whitelist. Example with Microsoft Outlook 2007: Main Account associated with the DSL: owner@snet.com w/ pw: ownerpw Incoming mail (POP3) for employee 1: person1@gregory-builders w/ pw: person1pw Configure the person1's e-mail and address with this password. Incoming mail (POP3)--use the server: mail.gregory-builder.com with port 110 (no SSL) Outgoing mail (SMTP)--use the server: smtp.att.yahoo.com with port 465 (use SSL) Select to login to the SMTP server with owner@snet.com w/ pw: ownerpw My server requires authentication (check) Finish the Outlook 2007 changes and close Outlook. Next visit mail.yahoo.com and login with owner@snet.com w/ pw: ownerpw Go to the options (mail options|accounts) and add an account such as Work1, put in the name of person1 in the first box and person1@gregory-builders w/ pw: person1pw and then save. You'll next see a Yahoo verification page containing a box that needs a verification number. The verification number sent to the e-mail of person1@gregory-builders.com at that point. (Incoming still works okay.) Open Outlook 2007 and look for an incoming e-mail from Yahoo with the confirmation number. Copy the confirmation into the webpage box at Yahoo and finish the verification process. Log out of Yahoo Mail after Checking the account of Work1 to see if it displays okay. Close and reopen Outlook 2007 again. The e-mails inbound and outbound should now work. This process must be used for person2, person3, etc.
