BASIC NOTATION IN CHESS:
Board Postions:
Files are vertical columns left to right on the board: QR, QN, QB, Q, K, KB, KN, KR and are the same from either side of the board. However, Ranks are numbered 1 - 8 from each side of the board.

Moves:
A move with the white Knight from its home square at KN1 to a square that is up 2 and 1 to the left would be written as N-KB3. Up 2 and 1 to right, on the other hand, would be written as N-KR3.

Captures:
Pieces taken are written with an "x", such as BxP. (Bishop takes Pawn.) When there are say two Knights that can both take the same Rook, the notation looks like N(Q4)xR. (The Knight on Queen's file, rank 4 takes the Rook. When there are two Pawns that a Bishop can take, specify which Pawn such as the one on KB5. The notation would be BxP(KB5).

Castling:
Castling (with the Rook and King simultaneously) is noted on the King's side of the board with O-O. On the Queen's side of the board the notation is O-O-O. When castling, the king must not move over a square that is under attack. (nor move into check)

Check or Mate:
Check is listed with a "ch" after the move such as QxB ch. The final move might be listed as QxB mate.

Pawn Takes Pawn En Passant (In passing):
When a Pawn moves ahead two squares on its first move, it may be taken by an enemy Pawn in a position to threaten the first of these squares. (The taken Pawn is removed and the enemy Pawn moves diagonally forward.) The notation is PxP en.

Comments in Chess:
Good moves get ! or !! after them. Bad moves get ? or ?? after them.

Game History:
The game history is usually in this notation with each complete move numbered with white's move listed first. See below for what the first complete move of a game looks like.
