Fixing a Windows 7 Profile -------------------------- Fix #1 (Backup Restore Method) ------ 1. Boot into SafeMode as an administrator. 2. Use a Backup Restore Fix #2 (Fix Windows Registry Entries) ------ 1. Boot into SafeMode as an administrator. 2. Run regedit 3. Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList . 4. Determine the entry which as the user with the problem profile. Usually an entry with a long file name. A healthy entry usually has no extension after the name. There may be a double entry one with .bak and one without. 5a. If a double entry ends in .bak, rename it to .ba and add .bak to the entry without an extension. Then go back to the changed entry with .ba and remove the .ba extension. 5b. If a single entry ends in .bak, remove the .bak . 6. Now use the entry with an extension and click open RefCount and change the DWORD to 0 (hex). Also click open State and change its DWORD to 0. 7. Close the registry and restart the computer. Fix #3 (Create and Migrate to a New Profile) ------ 1. Boot into SafeMode as an administrator. 2. Create a new user account and choose Workgroup. 3. Open Windows explorer change how folders appear: a. Show hidden files, folders & drives. b. Hide protected operating system files. 4. Navigate to C:\Users\ and select all files to copy except for a. Ntuser.dat b. Ntuser.dat log c. Ntuser.ini 5. Navigate to C:\Users\ and paste what you copied. 6. Log off and then back on as the new user. If you have e-mail messages in an e-mail program, you must import your e-mail and addresses to the new user profile before you delete the old profile. 7. When all necessary files have been found and migrated to the new user, including Desktop files and images, browser favorites, etc., then delete the old profile using the control panel User Accounts. (A delay in deleting the profile might be prudent.)
